Job Search is a tiring process and the most uncertain, uncontrollable aspect of it is waiting for the response after the interview calls. Everybody wants positive results and wants their job search ends and possible. But the reality is far from the expectation. Delay/no response or negative response after the interview is a sad reality of the job market. No hiring teams or the jobseekers expect that one successful joining requires only an interview. Strong Competition

This is most the obvious reason a jobseeker gets a negative response after interview calls. Skills, Salary, location of the applicant, notice period, culture fit (culture of the organization) are some important factors that decide the selection in the interview. Industry and domain knowledge is also considered by some companies for selection of candidates.

Too many applicants

Sometimes, the hiring process of an organisation involves interviewing too many candidates. This may be because of the company’s experience or very choosy hiring managers. This may increase the cost of hire and time but also increase the applicants who will receive a negative response. 

Bad Listening Skills

Unable to understand a question in one go, is a big red flag in the interview. Please concentrate on the interview and stop thinking about the world during the interview. Bad listening skills can be interpreted as difficult to manage personality. This can cause rejection in the interview.

Behaviour and Attitude

The lack of behavioural skills for the job for which you are getting interviewed, you may get rejected after the interview. This generally happens with fresh graduates when they apply for jobs. Attitude and behaviour contributes towards many jobs. Research a few traits required for the job which you are applying if you are a fresher and then portray those skills in the interview. Organizations sometimes go in the market and open a position which may not exist in reality. Such positions are opened to collect the data from the applicants. Fake positions are used to collect data for marketing and sales. Yes, this is very unethical and should not be done. This spoils the brand image and availability of applicants for the future positions. 

Biased hiring

A manager wants to hire his/her favourite or referred person in their company. But they have to show their company that they are following the normal process. As the selection has already happened before the process, an interview is a joke for such situations. This is a very annoying reason jobseekers get negative responses after an interview call.

Changes in the job description

After interviewing some applicants, there may be a situation of changes in the job description. When you discuss the challenges and tasks related to a job with different applicants, companies may find error or change in the thought process to pursue the job responsibilities. I am sure you may have come across some job in your past. What some organizations do is that they select minor projects and problems which their existing employees cannot do or solve. They divide those problems and projects further and make interview tests and questions. Jobseekers do the required task for the companies but receive only rejection in return.

Your social media or background check 

These days organizations do a background check before hiring their employees. They may use third parties or do it themselves. Interviewed applicants are easily searchable on social media. But your social media existence ideology or media may offend some organizations and may become a reason for negative responses after an interview call for the jobseeker.


When a jobseeker gets negative responses after an interview call, it is not the end of the road. Rejection is a part of the process when doing a job search. Persistence and positive attitude is the key to success.
